Safford may have bee Salford.  The family first settled in Ipswich, Massachussetts before 1630 at the time of the establishment of the Massachusetts Bay Colony by the Puritans.  Thomas Safford is said to have come over from England via the Fortune.  Thomas was a blacksmith in Ipswich.  They owned a small island in the bay and erected a furnace for smelting bog iron found there.
